Warning for Kids Who Use Tablets

Meron ba kayong tablet that you allow your kids to play with? For us, yes. We recently bought Ate 1 a Samsung Tab 2 for her birthday as she always ungot this every single day. So Dad and I decided to buy her one for her birthday and to show how we appreciate her when she took care of bunso when we're sleeping during the day and Mama has something to do.

However, be mindful parents! According to doctors, allowing children, particularly those under two years old, to use a tablet for prolonged periods of time may actually do more harm than good to their developing bodies.

In an interview with Baltimore.cbslocal.com, occupational therapist Lindsay Marzoli says, “If they are always on the iPad and not actually doing those paper and pencil activities that they should be doing, those muscles are going to remain weaker. What we’re seeing is a lot of children coming in with some motor delays, some decreased muscle strength in areas.”

Though we can't deny that exposing our kids to these touchscreen gadgets will give them some educational benefits, experts advise to limit their exposure at least 15 mins at a time. And that being said, I encourage parents to make some fun outdoor. Aside from the vitamins they could get from Haring Araw, they would be able to learn how to cope to their surrounding and socialize.

Wowowillie... Again?

I still remember when the days when I am fond watching Willie Revillame's noon time show in ABS- CBN. However, I got annoyed and started not to watch his shows when there was an issue between him and the said network. Feeling ko kasi eh medyo yumabang sya.

I have nothing against Willie. I know he has the heart to help. Maybe pangit lang yung approach nya.

So when I've read that Willie is thinking to revive his show, Wowowillie, I said, "Bakit? Anung meron?" Para kasing hindi pa sya natuto. He has been with 2 different networks. Though I forgot what really happened when he aired in TV 5 and they stop airing the show, I think it's a good decision. ;)

According to his interview with Pep.ph, he's planning to revive the show early next year. Pinag-aaralan pa DAW kasi nya kung saan maraming makakapanood ng programang balak nyang gawin. Eh as as we all know, the theme and concept would be the same...onting bola sa host, "Bigyan ng jacket yan at 5 thousand pesos!!!" So the only question hanging would be...saang network na naman kaya sya pupunta??

Of course I wish god luck and God bless. I know he has good intentions, wag nga lang sana masyaong lumaki ang ulo...

Show Your Parents Some Love

As we all know, Papa passed away 2 years ago. So, we only have my mom with us. She' the one who looks after my kids when I am at work at night or sleeping in the morning. In short, she does most of things that I should be doing. This is why I love her so much. Though she never has this time with us before because she's also a working mom, it seems that she paid the lost time now.

This post might be a tip for some, but for me, I just want to share how I show my appreciation to my mom.

1. We go to spa.
This is the very usual activity that my mom and I do since I o my nails twice a month. There's a near spa in our area that offers foot spa with mani and pedi. If we have more time, we have a massage too.

2. Watch movie.
Mama loves to watch movies, most especially Tagalog movies starring her favorite actors. It's a simple bonding time. So after watching a movie we just dine for a while then go home. Remember, we can't be away for too long since we just ask Dad or Ate 1 to take care ur youngest.

3. Lastly, travel.
If Dad and I find time, we usually go out of town. Though this seldom happens, we make sure that Mama join us. She also loves to travel, and her wish is to stay in Baguio some day because that's what Papa promised her before, to bring her to Baguio. Unfortunately, we still can't find to go. We planned this year for her birthday, however, due to unavoidable circumstances, it was cancelled, and we just cooked for her on her special day.

I want Mama to feel special and loved in every way. Aside from the fact she's our part-time yaya and she's the one we have, she still take care of us in her own special way even we're all grown-ups!

Birth Control Pills' Long Time-Users are at Risk

I am currently taking birth-control pills because we're not yet ready to have a baby. I got scared when I read about the recent study conducted by researchers from the University of California San Francisco, Duke University School of Medicine and Third Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University in China that long time users of birth-control pills are at risk for Glaucoma.

Glaucoma is an eye condition resulting in the damage of the optic nerve, often leading in blindness.

Past studies have connected the low estrogen level of post menopausal women with increased glaucoma risk. In connection, the new study suggests that prolonged use of birth control pills results in low estrogen levels, resulting in a similar risk for the eye disease.

The researchers note that anyone can develop glaucoma, but age, being African-American, and having a history of retinopathy (a retina disease resulting in blindness) are definite risk factors. Moreover, “…women who have taken oral contraceptives for three or more years should be screened for glaucoma and followed closely by an ophthalmologist, especially if they have any other existing risk factors,” said Shan Lin, M.D., the lead researcher.

Jobs, a Movie Review

Dad and I watched Jobs earlier before we decided to go to Divisoria, which will be featured in a different post.

In the meantime, Jobs is the story of Steve Jobs' ascension from college drop-out into one of the most revered creative entrepreneurs of the 20th century, starring Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs, and directed by Joshua Michael Stern.

The verdict:
This is a feel-good movie because the story will motivate people. Dad said that Ashton Kutcher was able to copy how the real Steve Jobs walks.

However, I think the movie is nakakabitin. It is like nagpalabas lang movie for the sake na magkapera. Ewan ko ha, but like I've said that's only my opinion. Para kasing it's all because namatay si Steve Jobs.

Of course there's a moral lesson sa story, kelangan nilang lagyan ng ganun to have an effect to those people who'll watch, like us. Sabi ni Dad, ok naman daw, and he really didn't expect much, too.

It's lacking of something. Maybe because I didn't find much else about Jobs' motivation for this take-no-prisoners drive to be the best in business world.

I would still recommend this movie though. If you don't know Steve Jobs, like me, you might wanna watch this. However, if you know him much, maybe just stay what you are or something else.

On the brighter side, here are some behind the scenes:

To prepare for his role, Ashton Kutcher followed a fruitarian diet, similar to Steve Jobs' reported diet. Days before shooting, he was hospitalized with pancreatitis.

Almost all of the scenes involving Jobs' parents' house and garage were filmed in the actual Los Altos, California house and garage where Steve Jobs grew up in the 1970s.

Today...

Couples Who Text Too Much are Not Always Sweet

Experts say that strong relationships are built with constant communication, does this include receiving text messages more than the usual?

According to the new study published in the Journal of Couple and Relationship, 82% of young adults say they text their romantic partner multiple times a day, but all that connectivity, it seems, doesn't always translate to greater relationship bliss.

The study also reveals that men who texted more often in general reported lower relationship quality than those who didn’t ping their significant others as frequently. The researchers can only speculate about why, but suspect that as men disconnect from a relationship, or consider a break-up, they replace face-to-face interactions with less intimate communication in the form of increased texting.

Women, on the other hand, who texted more often, reported higher quality connections with their mates than those who messaged more sparingly. Women tended to take to their smartphone keyboards to apologize, work out their differences and make decisions — in other words, when their relationship was in trouble. As their connection with their loved one deteriorated, women attempted to make up or resolve their differences via text, which the scientists believe is the online version of the need to “talk things out."

I used text messaging to communicate with my loved ones. I may say that it wasn't the volume of messages but the content that will affect the quality of our relationship. In addition, texting may also enhance your romance most especially if you received loving messages.

Understanding the role of texting plays in the way lovers communicate could lead to greater appreciation for when such missives help, and when they don’t. For now, texting seems to be best for the first blush of new romance, and better left alone when deeper conflicts arise.

Being a Mother is NOT the Most Important Job in the World

Hello fellow mommies! Have you read this article written by Catherine Deveny for TheGurdian.com

We have our own opinions and I respect it. Maybe I just got hurt after reading the post. In my case as a working mom and a wife of an OFW before, it's really really hard to have a balance life, family, and career. An I'll fight for it! Most especially now, since hubby is working here in the Philippines, I am pretty sure that he can't be the same metikulosa as I am when we talk about our kids.

One day, I asked hubby to go to our eldest meeting in school for her first communion since I won't be able to come because my shift ends at 8:30am and the meeting will start at 9am. When Dad came home and I asked him what happened? He just replied with, "There'll be another meeting the next day to finalize. You may attend to that to know everything since what we did is just to plan today." I am not saying that Dad don't care at all, but answered, "Why? Do you have notes? (like what I am doing when I attend school meeting)". He responded, "No, I don't have any." -End of conversation.-

I know some mothers will agree that fatherhood is very different compared to being a mother. I always ask this question when I hear something bad about my kids, "Bakit ang tatay, mabigyan lang ng mgandang buhay ang mga anak; nakakakain araw-araw, may magagandang damit, nakakapag-aral sa magandang eskwelahan ang mga anak, masasabi na nating mabuti syang ama, pero ang nanay, kahit na feeling mo ginawa mo na ang lahat at may nangyaring masama sa anak mo, sayo ang sisi, and sasabihin pang hindi ka naging mabuting ina?"

Please don't get me wrong and I don't want single dads and gay dads to feel bad. Because for me, vaginal laceration when giving birth and breastfeeding is not how you define motherhood, it's how you take care and love your kids the best way that you can even if your man or a woman most especially if you're balancing family and career!

Please take time to read the article and let me know hat you feel afterwards.

Beware Volunteers!!!

I came across a blog post asking to spread the word to help them find this thief who stole his friend's Samsung S4 while doing a volunteer work at Villamor Airbase on November 19, 2013.

Here's what happened:
This thief started taking #selfie pictures using his stolen gadget, but what he didn't know is the owner of the phone linked her photo album with Dropbox account, it means that all of his photo get uploaded to the owner's other online sharing account.

Here's what the owner posted regarding this incident:

I just want to give a friendly warning to all of you especially who are volunteering now in Villamor Airbase and other relief operations. Some people are just here to really take advantage during times like these.
As you might know, I lost some valuables last Tuesday, November 19, while doing volunteer work in Villamor Airbase. Before we even started, we noticed this guy in pink shirt lingering around our designated area, but since we thought he is with the other volunteer group with the sole purpose also of helping the Yolanda survivors, we just ignored him and continued packing & distributing relief goods. Little did we know that he was there not to help, but he was there for his own personal gain.
Thanks to technology, I was able to confirm my suspicions. Two days after the incident, I was able to retrive pictures of him thru my Dropbox app account that is synced to my stolen Samsung S4 phone. YESSS! THE THIEF IS UNKNOWINGLY SENDING ME HIS SELFIE PICS!!!
The police said this might be a scheme/ modus operandi, so please, to all of you, please be warned. Look at his pictures. Stare at it. (Creepy!!) Be vigilant. Take care of your things and beware of people like him. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD. Pls help me share.
Without further a-do, here's the #selfie pictures of the thick-faced thief:

New Work Schedule

Starting Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, I'll have new work a schedule... 11x4: 10:00pm to 9:00am and my restdays would be Thursday, Sunday, and Monday.

What's in it for me?
The Pros
1. I'll have an additional restday which means more time to spend with family.
2. I don't have work during the days we're receiving a big volume of calls.
3. I don't need to ride a jeep or cab on my way work since LRT is still open when I go and come home from work.
4. I'll still have a full-time income even I come to work 4 days in a week only.

The Cons
1. I'll have less time each day for sleep.
2. Tiresome both mentally and physically.
3. Long work hours make it difficult for after-work activities.
4. During work days, it would be difficult to locate adequate child-support care.

I've been with the business for 7 years, and I think this is the first time I'll have an 11x4 shift, 11 hours in 4 days in a week. And my pros and cons shows balance right now, but I'll definitely update it once I've tested the waters.

Freddie Aguilar and His 16-year old Girlfriend

I know you were blown by the news when Freddie Aguilar, Philippines' renowned folk singer confirm that he has a 16-year old girlfriend. Well, here's the latest from them... As I read it from Female Network, they'll be soon tying a knot! What the h*ck??!

What made me laugh is the fact that they'll exchange vows today, Nov 22nd, through Islamic rites?

Wanna know why the immediate change of religion? First, allow me to explain that according to the Muslim's Family Code (Presidential Decree 1083, any Muslim male at least fifteen years of age and any Muslim female of the age of puberty or upwards and not suffering from any impediment under the provisions of this Code may contract marriage. A female is presumed to have attained puberty upon reaching the age of fifteen.

Please don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Muslims. Maybe I am just p*ssed to the fact that Aguilar is just using the religion for his personal convenience. Well, Mangudadatu is correct, it's Aguilar's accountability to God. So, maybe... I'll just send my best wishes and may God bless them.

How Lupang Hinirang Should Be Sung

I remember during my elementary days that we need to sing our national anthem, Lupang Hinirang, every single day. Minsan nakakatamad ng kumanta tapos susundan pa ng napakahabang panatang makabayan... Halos nagmamadali ka ng kumanta para makapasok na sa klase at ma-upo. I've also experienced this feeling kapag nanonood ng last full show sa cinemas... UNTIL TODAY!

Watch this video to know what I am taking about:

After watching this, goosebumps talaga. I felt the song... it likes it hit me. Joey Ayala made me feel how we should love our country and help one another most especially right now.

How about you, sisses? How did you feel?

The 1,000 Bear Hugs Project

I came across a blog post regarding a project called "The 1,000 Bear Hugs."

photo credit: 1000 Bear Hugs Twitter

From the 1000 Bear Hugs Project:

1000 Bear Hugs Project is a toy drive campaign to bring huggable bears and plushies to children in the evacuation centers of Tacloban and Bohol.

To facilitate efficient toy distribution, we will not be accepting soiled or damaged toys, hard toys, battery-operated toys, or anything mechanical or weapon-like. The new and clean pre-loved toys you donate will be used for the children’s psychosocial needs and trauma debriefing.

We will be collecting stuffed toys from November 9-December 8 for a Christmas delivery for the children. We also hope you find the time to help other immediate #reliefPH efforts as well, such as providing food, water, clothing, and medicines to those who need it most. Thank you for supporting the #1000bearhugs initiative!

If you want to be part of this project, you may visit this link for the drop-off points. However, if you want to send it through me, you may shoot me an email at miradelosreyesblog@gmail.com.

Katalyst Team Building

For the first time, I find time to join one of our team building, sorry but I can't remember the exact date. It was a breakfast after shift. My supervisor arranged it because we won some prize at the office.

We just ate and do some chit-chats, and they enjoyed singing since we dine at a place where has a videoke. I love the food we ordered.

Yun nga lang compared sa mga team buildings before na umattend ako, walang inuman which is a good thing for me, kasi I don't drink na, and I feel tired and sleepy after our sumptuous meal. Nakakalungkot lang kasi pag-uwi ako na lang mag-isa. Halos lahat kasi sila southbound, ako lang ang pa-north, and since yung place eh hindi accessible ng public transpo, I have no choice but to take a cab....

Cooper Responded To Sanchez's Report

Anderson Cooper, an international news anchor, addressed Korina Sanchez's allegations.

screencap via YouTube
On November 14, Sanchez criticized Cooper on her radio program. Pep.ph quoted her by saying:

“Itong si Anderson Cooper, sabi wala daw government presence sa Tacloban. Mukhang hindi niya alam ang sinasabi niya (Anderson Cooper said there's no government presence in Tacloban. It seems like he doesn't know what he's saying).”

On November 15, Anderson addressed this report by saying that he was misunderstood.

“Miss Sanchez used to be under the mistaken impression that I said I saw no presence of Philippine government on the ground in Tacloban. I never said that. Obviously, I’ve been on the ground in Tacloban for days. And, in fact, I've interviewed a very heroic Philippine Navy captain, Captain Santiago, who’s going out and helping people. I’ve seen the work being done and the work that’s not being done,” he said on-air.
To prove this, he relayed a video footage of his report, which was aired on November 13.

“As for who exactly is in charge of the Philippine side of this operation, that is not really clear. I am just surprised. I expected on this Day Five, I thought I may have gotten here very late, that things will be well in hand—it does not seem like that. People are desperate, they do not have any place for shelter. It’s very difficult for people to get food, neighbors are helping out neighbors, water is in short supply. It is a very very bad situation here,” he said.

“Accuracy is what we care most about here at CNN. We’re giving information that might actually help people on the ground, and help the relief effort in some way, to become more efficient. In our reporting, it seems, out here in the Philippines, it has become something of a political issue at times,” the news anchor later on added.

“In every report we’ve done, we’ve shown how strong the Filipino people are. The Filipino people, the people of Tacloban, in Samar, in Cebu, and all these places where so many have died, they’re strong not just to survive this storm. They’re strong to have survived the aftermath of the storm. They’ve survived for a week now, often with very little food, with very little water, with very little medical attention. Can you imagine the strength it takes to be living in a shack, to be living, sleeping on the streets next to the body of your dead children? Can you imagine that strength? I can’t, but I see that strength day in and day out here in the Philippines, and we honor them in every broadcast that we do,” an emotional Anderson concluded.

In my point of view, we all have the right to make a comment. So, I don't have anything against Korina. Most especially kung nasa middle na nga tayo ng crisis eh nambabatikos pa. Kaya lang sana, since she's a public personality and most people admire her because of her integrity. Sana inalam nya muna lahat ng panig ng story, or she should have done some research muna. I know that Cooper doesn't have any bad intentions when he responded. So, sana 'wag na ulet mamis-interpret.

I don't know what to say and what to react. Dad and I almost cry when we're just sharing our POVs on what happened. I can't imagine myself in that situation, most especially when this time come and I am with my kids. Maybe my panic will attack me... big time.

I don't know how to help. It's not because the info on where and how to help is not available, but honestly, we really don't have anything to give as of thi time. Maybe what we can only give is our prayers. Our income is sapat only, and I think masho-short pa kami ngayon, but once I'll have extra maybe this coming Christmas, I'll donate some. I know it's just a little amount, but for them, it's like extending their existence, and I hope it would also give them hope.

For those people like us, even our society requires us to give what we can't at this time, don't force ourselves. In the meantime, let's give them what we can and the most powerful of them all...prayers!

School Announcements

I am awake since 4am today to prepare Ate 1 and 2 for school. Around 5am, ginising ko na si Ate 1 to prepared since she needs to be in school 10 mins before 6am. So, around quarter to 6, she already waited outside our house for her service, but come 6am wala pa din.

I came outside our house and asked our neighbor if they saw Kuya Roland, our service. Then, Ate Minda, Chloe's mom (Ate 1's classmate), come to me and said, "Wala daw pasok ngayonn kasi Palarong Pambansa!" And I said, "What???!".

What annoys me is the fact that they don't give announcement. The school should have informed their students or their parents by writing something on kid's assignment notebook.

Hindi ko tuloy alam gagawin ko since today is Ate 1's schedule in for kumpisal. Well, meron pa naman bukas. I just hope ma-accommodate nila lahat ng students, kasi ayoko pumunta sa special kumpisal day, which lahat ng hindi nakapagkumpisal on their scheduled date from different school will come. Nawo-worry tuloy ako.
